Brisbane, "In this fast-paced world, where social media consumes our lives and post likes & comments have taken the place of a real one-to-one compliment or a smile, a recent event held last Saturday (29th of May) reminded people the importance of valuing and maintaining one's mental health and mental well-being, especially at a time when the whole world is fighting the battle against the pandemic in one way or another.
GOPIO Qld & QLD Mental Health Commission had organised a Mental Health Awareness event which was held at the QMC Auditorium,Kangaroo Point on the 29th of May. This event brought the Brisbane community together to talk about and discuss a very relevant topic which is not often talked about-Mental Health, with the theme - How to take care of your mental well-being in 2021. Arpit Singh,Treasurer of GOPIO Qld was the initiator of the event and was in-charge of its planning and execution. The whole GOPIO Qld committee successfully hosted the event under the guidance of President Rakesh Sharma & GOPIO Qld's Business Council chair, Umesh Chandra OAM.
Mental Health Experts from esteemed organisations like Black Dog Institute, Qld Trans-cultural Mental Health Centre (a body of Qld Govt),World Wellness Group and The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, came together to discuss the importance & the crucial need for mental health awareness and education in the Indian diaspora and the community in general as well. Lady Mayoress, Nina Schrinner also graced the event with her attendance and shared her concerns over the growing rate of suicides amongst men and the predictions of a mental health pandemic in the near future.Lady Mayoress emphasised on the need to have more open discussions about the mental health and congratulated GOPIO Qld for organising a forum to initiate the discussion and education on the topic.
Peter Ferriera from Black Dog Institute presented a presentation on'Breaking Down Depression'and explained the
facts about Depression in
a very easy-to-understand manner.He laid down the main symptoms of Depression to look out for and the ways to help your near and dear ones who might be suffering from it.
The four panelists were;Dr Soman Elangowan (Senior Consultant Psychiatristat Belmont Private Hospital) Sonia Kumari (Metro North Mental Health Services), Peter Ferreira (Black Dog Institute), Umesh Chandra OAM – session was moderated by Arpit Singh.
